Southgate at Shrewsbury

Contractor: R.W. Granger & Sons
Area: 390,297 square feet
Completion Date: 1989

This project consists of two sprawling structures connected by an enclosed pedestrian bridge at the second level. Zoning restrictions limited the building height to three stories resulting in the campus type plan.

The structures contain 233 residential units including assisted living, studio, one and two bedroom apartments. Third floor units feature a bay window over second floor unit balconies. Among the many amenities offered the tenants are dining room, snack bar, theater, health club with indoor pool, shops, bowling lanes, library, game rooms, and cocktail lounge.

The irregular shape and topography of the site located on opposite sides of a public way bordered by a wetlands area presented a very difficult site planning challenge. The problem was compounded by the necessity of physically connecting Southgate to an existing nursing home in order to share services. A central kitchen in Southgate services the nursing home, and a central laundry in the nursing home services Southgate. The entire facility is set in a park with gazebo, fountains, and a putting green.

Use of some of the common area amenities by community groups is encouraged, expanding the relationship of one generation to another and keeping the elder population of Southgate a viable community asset.
